Is there anything more fun to watch in the animal world, than monkey’s? Let’s face it: both children and adults alike, love these silly, lovable primates. When we see them at the zoo, sometimes it’s almost impossible to tear ourselves away from watching them. As an ongoing reminder as to how much we enjoy them, monkey stuffed animals are the perfect keepsake of these fascinating creatures.

Children have been enjoying the adventures of the most famous monkey on the planet, Curious George, for 60 years. Even Curious George, made into the likeness of monkey stuffed animals, are wildly popular. In fact, the introduction to monkey’s and monkey stuffed animals could very well be when a child hears a Curious George story for the first time. It would come as no surprise that they would be instantly hooked after learning of Curious George’s zany adventures.

The creators of Curious George were a married couple Hans Ugusto Rey and Elizabeth Waldstein. Rey grew up near the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany and as a result developed a love for both animals and drawing. His wife, who was also raised in Hamburg, eventually left there to study art.
Following their European honeymoon in 1935, they moved to Paris to live. After a French publisher saw Rey’s newspaper cartoons of a giraffe, Rey was asked to expand on the drawing and as a result, his first children’s book entitled Ragi et les 9 singes (in English: Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys) was soon published. It was in this first book that Curious George the monkey, made his debut.

Following the publishing of his first book, the Reys went on to decide that the little mischievous monkey, Curious George, needed a book of his own. Before the manuscript could be published, however, the Reys were forced to flee Europe because of Nazi occupation (the couple were both German Jews). The Curious George manuscript was one of the few things they brought with them when they managed to escape France on makeshift bicycles. They made their way to America, where in 1941, Houghton Mifflin, published the first Curious George book.

The seven original stories of Curious George written by the Rey’s, along with all the other Curious George stories, have sold well over 25 million copies. The original story was so popular, in fact, that it is has never been out of print. Curious George is one of the most recognized characters in children’s literature, even today, and his adventures have been published in many languages including Japanese, Portuguese, German, Swedish, and Chinese, to name a few.

Whether you have a child that just saw their very first monkey at the zoo or loves having Curious George stories read to them, you can be sure that monkey stuffed animals will (if they haven’t already) make their way into their ever-growing stuffed animal collection.
