You may have read the book We’re Going On A Bear Hunt. This book is a favorite with my little ones. It is a fun and repetitive story about a family looking for a bear.
You can transfer this concept over into your reading program. I like to take about 10 flash cards and place them around the house. I might put one on the couch, one near a lamp, one on the floor, etc…
I tell my baby that we are going on a word hunt. We then walk around the house and I ask out loud, “I wonder if we can find the word bubbles.” We continue on until we locate all the words.
Many times, before my baby could speak, she would demonstrate that she could read the words. I would pause slightly and she would reach for the correct card.
You can play this game to teach new words or to review some old ones. You can ask your baby to find them, or you can just point to them and pick them up.
If your baby ever grabs the wrong card, don’t tell them they got it wrong. You want to gently correct them. You might say something along the lines of, “That says mango, and this is the word banana.”
All that we are doing is playing with our children and we don’t want them to feel that they have failed in any way if they select the wrong card. Always keep it light and fun for your child.
This is an excellent way to use flash cards with an active baby. Since you are on the move, you don’t have to concern yourself with trying to keep them still while you show them words.
Jump Over Word Cards
Some parents like to place the word cards on the floor and have their babies jump over the words. This is great for older babies. It is another method that can easily be used with very active babies. You can set out two cards and have your baby jump over a certain card, or you can place a line of words spaced out on the floor. You can start at one end of the room and hop over words all the way to the other end.
These are all just suggestions. I am sure you will adapt them and change them as you see fit for your particular child. Each child is an individual and you have to adjust everything I am teaching you to fit your child and your lifestyle. If one method doesn’t work for you, simply try a different one.
